Merv Harris Memorial Bursary Award
Who is Merv Harris?
Merv Harris devoted his life to encouraging young people, particularly in training and apprenticeships within the plumbing and gas industry. This award honours his legacy by recognising an apprentice who demonstrates ongoing improvement through hard work, dedication, and commitment to their trade.
To be eligible for this award, proudly supported by CSQ, the nominee must meet the following requirements:
- Must be under 23 years of age.
- Must be based in Queensland, Australia.
- Must have completed a minimum of two blocks of college training.
- Must provide photo and/or video evidence of their work.
Note: Nomination is not required for this award. All 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year apprentice nominees will be automatically considered if they meet the above criteria.

Nominees will be evaluated based on:
- On-the-Job Performance – Demonstrated excellence in work ethic and skills.
- Commitment to the Plumbing & Gas Trade – Evidenced dedication to learning and development.
- Technical Knowledge – Understanding of plumbing and gas principles, industry regulations, and best practices.
- Role Model Qualities – Serving as an inspiration to other young apprentices.
- Personal, Academic & Industry Achievements – Recognition of efforts in education, work, and industry participation.
- Initiative, Leadership & Creativity – Demonstrated problem-solving, leadership, or innovative thinking.
- Community & Personal Contributions – Involvement in extracurricular activities or contributions to the community.
- Future Goals & Aspirations – A clear vision for career progression within the plumbing and gas industry.
- Completion of the nomination questionnaire, providing insights into the apprentice’s skills, experiences, and professional growth.
- Submission of a minimum of 10 high-resolution photos showcasing on-the-job work.
- Optional: Video footage demonstrating technical skills or discussing the apprentice’s journey.
- Employer or trainer reference supporting the nomination.
- Availability for a phone interview (July or August 2025) if shortlisted.
Failure to submit any required information by the stated deadlines may result in disqualification.
Following the completion of the judging, all finalists for this award will be notified and invited to attend the 2025 Plumbing & Gas Industry Awards. All apprentice award finalists will receive one complimentary ticket (valued at $286) and can purchase additional tickets at the finalist rate.
Finalists may also be asked to participate in media opportunities but will be contacted first by MPAQ to assess interest.
If you are the winner of this award category, you will receive:
- A trophy and certificate.
- A $500 bursary to be used for future training, skills development, or tools to assist in your apprenticeship. This amount must be utilised by 31 December 2026.
- Public recognition at the 2025 Awards Presentation Dinner and a feature in the Summer 2025 edition of the Master Plumber Magazine.
Runner Ups of this award category will also be acknowledged at the awards dinner and provided with a certificate and gift.
